TV makers launch Rs 17-25 lakh UHD range in India

NEW DELHI: A television priced at Rs 27 lakh? Yes. ManufacturersSony, Samsung and LG believe India is ready to be developed as a market for high-end ultra high definition (UHD) sets with demand for bigger screen sizes expected to grow.

Recently these companies have introduced their range of UHD televisions which are priced between Rs 17 lakh and Rs 27 lakh with screen sizes of 84-inch and 85-inch, hoping that they would be able to create a niche segment and get more marginsthese high-end products.

"Now, customer demands for even bigger screen sizes, upwards of 55-inch. For these kinds of large screen sizes, HD is actually not good enough to experience the best picture quality," Sony India General Manager, Marketing Tadato Kimura told PTI.

Therefore, it was inevitable to create a better technology to cater to this kind of demand and to complete the large screen experience (with UHD technology), he added.

The manufacturers are clear that they will be catering to a set of customers with the UHD products, which have been also launched worldwide only recently.

"Ultra HD TVs are a niche segment....In our opinion, the customer of ultra HD TVs is a pioneer who understands the technology, and seeks the unique experience the product delivers," LG India Marketing Head-Home Entertainment Rishi Tandon said.

Expressing similar sentiments, Samsung India Senior VP-Consumer Electronics Atul Jain said: "It is a new technology which is being introduced in the Indian and the global markets. So in many ways, we are creating the market in India at this moment."

The UHD TVs have better pixel resolution quality, four times than normal HD TVs, with richer and more saturated colors in much bigger screen size, although they are priced at a premium.

At present the biggest screen size that Sony and LG sell in normal HD TVs is 65 inch 3D TVs in the price range of Rs 3.60 lakh to Rs 3.75 lakh. Samsung offers up to 75 inch HD TV for Rs 7.50 lakh.

Apartcatering to a niche segment, the companies are also looking at better marginsthese UHD TVs as compared to mass segment products.

"The 4K technology TVs will give us value and better margins while smaller screen will drive volumes for the company," Sony India MD Kenichiro Hibi had said.

For LG, it is yet another step in widening its range of products in the market.

"We are looking to strengthen our product offering by introducing the Ultra HD displays in different screen sizes," Tandon added.

LG Optimus G2 event scheduled for August 7th

While final specifications on the LG Optimus G2 have not yet been solidified, the company hasbut guaranteed that we’ll be having our first official look on the 7th of August. Event invites for the press have been sent out for a New York City engagement that’ll be taking place on that date with a teaser “Great 2 Have You” attached – and the leaked photos of the device itself continue.
lgevent

What you’re about to see are a series of images and details leaked over the past week (or in some cases, the last several months). The first is a front and back image of the LG Optimus G2 suggesting that the rumors of a buttonless set of edges on this machine are true. Here LeaksChina provides photos so blurry you’ll have trouble believing they were captured by anything better than a 1 megapixel feature phone shooter – but they do the job regardless.
lgbigleakschina
Next you’ll see an image of the device’s left side. This image is provided by TechTastic and suggests that we’ll be seeing a rather thin device to boot.
Schermafbeelding-2013-07-08-om-00-1.48.341
It’s been suggested that this machine will be a hero device for LG to take on the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S 4. To do this, the company is tipped to be bringing on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor and a top-notch display with edge-to-edge technology making for a rather unique experience in the palm of the users’ hand.
• 5.5-inch 1080p display

• Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor at clock speed 2.3GHz for each of four cores

• 2GB RAM

• 13-megapixel back-facing camera aside volume and power buttons

• Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean / LG UI

• Edge-to-edge display (aka a very small bezel)
You’ll see a collection of leaked images and details collected by SlashGear back on June 22nd that make the case for the phone outlined above as well.
Also of interest is the invite image itself – this BEAST is a massive 2,999 x 2,584 pixels when extracted. This is FAR larger than any average event invite for the press – normally they’re less than a few hundred pixels large, and blurry at that. Here LG has clearly made an effort to go big – and sharp. Stick around for the full show – SlashGear will be in NYC on the 7th with bells on.

Vodafone beefs up its 4G tablet data plansWith the recent launch of its new 4G network, Vodafone has overhauled its mobile data plans for tablets.
Offering month-to-month and 24-month SIM-only contracts, you can get 2.5GB of data for $20 per month, 4GB of data per month for $30 or 8GB for $45 per month.
If you don't already have a tablet, you can get one through subsidised repayments on a 24-month contract.
Vodafone offers the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 for $19 extra on the $20 plan or $15 on the $30 and $45 plans. Over 24 months, the total cost will be $936, $1080 or $1440, respectively.
For the 16GB Retina iPad, it will cost an extra $27 on the cheapest plan (total cost $1128) or $23 on the higher two plans (total cost $1272 and $1632).

Just the one prepaid

Vodafone's new plans don't require a 24-month contract unless you are buying a subsidised tablet, and the entry-level offerings prove to have better value than Optus' (1GB for $20) and Telstra's (1GB for $25), which do require 24-month contracts.
Vodafone's prepaid choices, however, have dwindled to just the one option.
For $30, you can get 4GB over 30 days for micro- and nano-SIMs. A standard SIM will get you only 3GB for $29 over 30 days.
Vodafone is also offering up 500MB, 1.25GB and 2GB Data Boosters for $10, $20 and $30, respectively.

Apple App Store promo sees top titles given away

Apple has quietly discounted a number of high-profile iOS apps, making titlesInfinity Blade II and Tiny Wings free in what appears to be a promotion for the the 5th anniversary of the App Store. There’s currently no official wordApple on the sale, nor indeed a conclusive list of which titles have had their prices cut, but there are some big savings to be made: Traktor DJ, for instance, is usually a $19.99 download for the iPad version.
infinity_blade_ii_ipad

The current list of titles includes everythingmusic apps,Traktor DJ, through social and photography apps, such as Over, and through to games. It’s the latter category which is likely to be of most interest, with well-known titlesBadland and Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP on offer.
However, it’s likely that there are several more waiting to be discovered, something that’s tricky to do right now given the absence of any master list or even mention by the individual publishers in the app descriptions. So far, the only mention we can find is Epic Games‘ suggestion that Infinity Blade II will be “free for a limited time.”
Of course, there’s method in Apple’s discounting madness. Making in-demand apps free is only going to drive download numbers, as well as make in-app purchases for participating titles more likely.
The actual 5th anniversary of the App Store will take place on Wednesday this week, though we’re expecting Apple to make some official comment on the price changes ahead of that point, potentially later on today. Let us know if you spot any more new freebies in the comments.

Facebook Graph Search reaches to more users

| |
0 comments
NEW YORK: Users who may have grown frustrated with Facebook's rudimentary search feature are getting an updated version designed to make it easier to find people, places and photos on the site.

Facebook unveiled its social search tool in January but only made it available to a small fraction of its 1.1 billion users, as its engineers continued to tweak and test it. Over the next few weeks, the company is rolling out the social search tool, called "Graph Search," to everyone whose language is set to US English.

Unlike searches on Google, which are good for finding specific things, Facebook's tool is useful in unearthing information about your social circles. Graph Search lets you find friends who live in San Francisco who are vegan. Friends of friends who live near you andhiking. Photos of your boyfriend taken before you met him in 2010. Nearby restaurants that your friends- and so on.

But soon after Facebook launched the tool, the internet had a field day with less innocuous and more embarrassing queries, showing just how much information people reveal about themselves on the site, intentionally or not. Care to find out which brand of condoms your friends prefer? Graph Search might tell you.

A blog called actualfacebookgraphsearches.tumblr.com posted a collection of searches ranging"married people whoprostitutes" to "current employers of people whoracism." Both yielded more than 100 people.

While it is possible that some of those Facebook users are fully aware that what they've shared is easily searchable, it is likely that some are not. It's easy to click "like" on a page and forget about it.

To avoid any unpleasantness, Facebook plans to notify users that it's "getting easier for people to find photos and other things you've shared with them" along with a reminder that they can check "who can see my stuff" under their privacy settings.

"The goal is to avoid bad surprises," said Nicky Jackson Colaco, privacy and safety manager at Facebook. But she stressed Facebook's view that the search tool "indexes information differently than we have ever been able to do before, in a really positive way."

Facebook does not currently show users ads based on what they are searching for, but the company may do in the future. As Google has shown, it's a lucrative business. Research firm eMarketer estimates that Google will take nearly 42 per cent ofUS digital ad spending this year, well above Facebook's share of less than 7 per cent.

With its new search tool, Facebook is clearly trying to divert traffic and ad spendingits rival.

Google, Facebook criticize Singapore's new web rules

SINGAPORE: Singapore's move to tighten regulation of news web sites, already under firebloggers and human rights groups, has attracted criticisman unexpected quarter - large internet firms with a big presence in the city-state who say the new rules will hurt the industry.

Web giants Facebook, eBay, Google and Yahoo have said the revised rules "have negatively impacted Singapore's global image as an open and business-friendly country".

The comments, made in a letter to Singapore's minister of communications and information by the Asia Internet Coalition, an industry body, are the first sign that Singapore's success in wooing major players to its shores is not assured. Google, eBay, Facebook and Yahoohave a major presence in the city-state.

Google said separately it was concerned about the long-term implications of the regulation - especially for local internet entrepreneurs who it said now faced greater uncertainty and legal risk.

In late May Singapore said websites that regularly report on Singapore would have to be licensed and listed 10 news sites that would be affected, based on criteria such as having 50,000 unique visitorsSingapore each month.

Websites affected by the new licensing regime would have to put up a S$50,000 ($39,300) performance bond as well as take down within 24 hours any story that authorities deemed objectionable.

"Singapore aims to be the future, but this regulation looks a lotthe past," Google's Ann Lavin, director of public policy and government affairs, Southeast Asia, told Reuters.

The Media Development Authority (MDA) said the changes would make the rules governing news websites more consistent with those affecting newspapers and other traditional media platforms. But it has stressed there was no change in its content standards.

"The new licensing framework is not intended to clamp down on internet freedom," an MDA spokesman said in a written response to questions.

Growing sector
The Asia Internet Coalition was (AIC) set up in 2011 by Google, Facebook, Yahoo and eBay to lobby for free and open access to the Internet and promote e-commerce.

The internet and related industries have become an important sector for Singapore, with revenues last year growing 23 per cent to S$103 billion ($81 billion). The sector employs more than 144,000 people out of the city-state's 3.2 million workforce, according to government data.

"When you look at other countries in the region it's hard to see anyone immediately breathing down the neck of Singapore and Hong Kong," said John Ure, executive director of AIC. "But things can change. Five to 10 years is not a long time."

Singapore has attracted major internet companies to its shores in part because of its commitment to what it has called a "light touch" when it comes to policing the Web.

Yahoo's popular Singapore news site was the only foreign website among the 10 listed by the MDA, but critics fear the rules could be extended to cover other websites, including those critical of the government.

A senior official at the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) responsible for the ruling, Permanent Secretary Aubeck Kam, told a gathering of the Singapore Computer Society on Thursday that the rules would not cover commentary sites, and that the government had never ordered removal of content because it was critical of the government under existing regulations.

"Monsters under the bed"
The new rules will come under scrutiny later on Monday, with the opposition Workers' Party tabling questions such as how authorities would treat online news services catering to Singapore's large financial sector and individual Facebook pages with large followings.

A Yahoo spokesman said it had no official comment on the regulation but that the AIC's position was "broadly consistent with ours".

Rights groups have joined local bloggers in criticizing the move. Phil Robertson, deputy director of Human Rights Watch's Asia division, said that major internet companies adding their voice should give Singapore serious pause about its approach.

The government, "like a little boy in a dark bedroom, imagines that every bump in the night means there are monsters under the bed ready to pounce on Singapore's much vaunted social stability", he said.

Ure said the coalition's members had been unnerved by the announcement coming "out of the blue" at a time when it had been holding discussions with the Singapore government on several internet-related issues.

The regulations, he said, "muddied the waters" and that "anything that is seen to be a hindrance to the free flow of content and data" was of concern to his members.

"It's particularly concerning to the AIC that Singapore should appear to be giving the wrong signal, and countries around the region that are far less open and liberal might take their cueSingapore," he said.

Singapore has defended the revision to its regulations, and professed surprise at the opposition.

Kam, the MCI official, said that such concerns would likely be accommodated via consultations with the 10 websites over the wording of the licenses. "There is no need to read signals because we are communicating what we think," he told Ure during a question and answer session at the computer users' gathering.

Lobby group Reporters Without Borders, in its latest report, ranked Singapore 149th globally in terms of press freedom, down 14 places2012 and below many of its neighbors.

In 2011, the city-state's tiny opposition made big gains against the long-ruling People's Action Party in a parliamentary election, partly by using social media such as Facebook and YouTube to reach voters.

Does Nokia have battery life concerns with flagship Lumia 1020?

Does Nokia have battery life concerns with flagship Lumia 1020?
The name is still anyone's guess, but the battery inside the hotly tipped Nokia Lumia 1020 (or is that the Nokia 909?) may not be up to much after aging shell appeared online.
A snap of the accessory was picked up by Russian site Izvestia, and details which accompanied the photo suggested it would provide users with an additional 35 per cent battery life.
Apparently the Nokia-branded accessory packs a 1020mAh battery into the clip on shell, complete with sizeable porthole for that much-rumoured 41MP PureView camera.

Is that it?

That said, 1020mAh is relatively small for an externalging pack, with cases usually packing larger batteries at the expense of a bulkier design.
Nokia Lumia 1020 - Nokia 909 - LEAK
Usually these cases are produced by third party manufacturers and it seems a little odd that Nokia is making one itself. It raises our suspicions that the Lumia 1020 may struggle to see out a whole day on a singlege.
Luckilyour questions will be answered later this week as Nokia is due to reveal its next flagship smartphone - originally touted as the EOS - in New York on Thursday, and we'll be there to bring youthe latest.
  • Whet your appetite with a recap of everything we know about the Nokia Lumia 1020 so far

Don Mattrick tried to buy Zynga for Xbox while at Microsoft
Don Mattrick's move to Zynga might have been unexpected for some, but it turns out that the Microsoft ex-boss has had his eye on the social gaming site for quite some time.
Mattrick, who was President of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, had actually been in negotiations to buy Zyngaas far back as 2010, with talks between him and Zynga founder Mark Pincus going on for quite some time.
Mattrick became interested in Zynga when the Facebook game movement started taking off, and saw an opportunity to bring more social games to the Xbox lineup in the hope that they'd be just as successful on the console.
Things didn't pan out, however, and the conversations were ultimately fruitless for Microsoft. But it seems more certain that Mattrick had been toying with the idea of a move for quite some time, clearly enamored by Zynga's hold over generation Farmville.

Mattrick Reloaded

We can imagine Mattrick is feeling a lot better right now after a pretty hairy few weeks with the Xbox One andits DRM controversies and U-turning.
Mattrick has taken overPincus as CEO of Zynga, with the company hoping to reclaim its position as the number one game creator on Facebook - a title it recently lost to King.com.
Pincus will remain as chairman of the board of directors and as chief product officer. In fact, both Mattrick and Pincus have apparently become pretty tight over the years, and evento go bike-riding together. There's a nice image to brighten your Monday.
