HTC may be acquired by Lenovo: Report

HTC may be next among the telecom handset vendors in line for a big-ticket acquisition. If reports are to be believed, Taiwanese maker HTC is already in talks with Chinese manufacturer Lenovo either for an outright sale, or a manufacturing tie-up.

Internet media is abuzz with reports of some kind of deal brewing between Lenovo and HTC. According to Taiwanese language site AppleDailly, the two companies have been engaged in secret meetings to discuss "bilateral strategic cooperation."

HTC and Lenovo began discussing a possible deal way back in August, suggests the report. Though no details are available, it is believed the deal would leave the HTC brand intact, at least for initial few years.

Once a strong mobile phone player, HTC has faced troubled times in last one year. It posted a quarterly operating loss of $120 million in the last quarter as sales tumbled by a third from a year earlier, underscoring a dramatic decline for a company which boasts of award-winning smartphones, but has failed to develop a durable brand image and ensure strong marketing.

HTC's troubles have pushed its shares down some 55% for the year to date and sparked calls for the company to consider a radical overhaul. A JPMorgan note in July called for the company to look at merging with China's Huawei Technologies. However, Huawei has since said that it is not planning to acquire another smartphone-maker to grow its market share.

Incidentally, Lenovo has been trying to make inroads into the growing smartphone market. There were also rumours of the company buying the beleaguered smartphone maker BlackBerry.

In August, Lenovo reported a net profit of $174 million. The world's largest PC maker sold more smartphones than PCs for the first time in the company's history during the quarter. The strong sales propelled Lenovo to its fourth place in the global smartphone market, behind Samsung, Apple, and LG.

The company's strong sales in China, where it is the No. 2 smartphone maker, helped it strengthen its position. The top five global smartphone vendors in the second quarter according to IDC rankings were: Samsung with a 30.4 percent market share; Apple with 13.1%; LG Electronics with 5.1% ; Lenovo with 4.7% and ZTE with 4.2%.

Last month, Lenovo added a "premium" device to its smartphone lineup in it bid to broadens its challenge to market leaders Samsung Electronics Apple.

Even as adoption of Big Data technology is on the rise to make better business decisions, companies are also concerned about lack of skilled workforce to keep pace with the rate of IT innovation, a study by IT firm EMC said.

According to the study, 91% respondents from India said decisions in their organization would be improved by better use of data. Another 35% said their organizations have achieved a competitive edge through the use of Big Data tools. However, 82% respondents said ensuring that skills keep pace with the rate of IT innovation will be a challenge for their organizations over the next three years, it added.

The study found 57% respondents agreeing that their senior teams trust Big Data insights to make transformative decisions. Another 62% agreed that Big Data tools will prove vital in helping to identify and defend against cyberattacks.

"The domestic Big Data opportunity is expected to exceed $150 million. Add to this the opportunity for Indian IT service providers to address global Big Data demand, we are looking at a $1 billion opportunity by 2015. To tap this and the cloud opportunity requisite skills are needed," EMC India and Saarc president Rajesh Janey told .

By 2015, as per EMC Zinnov study 1,00,000 private cloud practitioners will be needed in India. Another study by Nasscom suggests an estimated 15,000-20,000 specialists will be needed for Big Data and related services.

IT management firm CA Technologies launched a free version of 'CA Nimsoft Monitor', which helps companies monitor their IT resources and servers, for small businesses in the country.

The new version, CA Nimsoft Monitor Snap, supports monitoring for up to 30 devices. The premium version CA Nimsoft Monitor allows users to monitor any number of devices.

The Nasdaq-listed company said the new solution is a fully-integrated single solution for monitoring of network resources, physical and virtual servers, and databases.

"Under-resourced customers faced an unacceptable choice between non-integrated 'point' monitoring tools, technically challenging open-source code ... that cost too much and took too long to implement," John Smith, general manager, Infrastructure Management, CA Technologies said.

"With CA Nimsoft Monitor Snap, these customers finally have a solution that genuinely meets their specific needs," he added.

The Snap solution can be set up and run in as little as an hour, the company said.

The new solution addresses the needs of emerging enterprises which lack the resources of their large corporate counterparts, it said.

Google to launch Chromebooks in India on Oct 17

Over two years after introducing them in the US, Google on Thursday announced that Chromebooks would be available in India from October 17. Chromebooks are light and portable laptops that are powered by Google's Chrome OS instead of Microsoft Windows.

Google said that initially HP and Acer would start selling their Chromebooks in the Indian market but in future more manufacturers like Samsung and Asus might join the fray.

The company said that from October 17 consumers would be able to buy Acer C720 or HP Chromebook 14. The Acer C720 is priced at Rs 22,999. The HP Chromebook 14 would cost Rs 26,990.

Chrome OS works differently compared to Windows. It is more suitable for light and web-based tasks and works best when the Chromebook is connected to the internet. Though with the recent updates Google has added more offline functionality to the OS.

Chromebooks cannot run programs that are available for Windows computers.

The appeal of Chromebooks lies in their fast boot performance, portability and good battery life. Compared to similarly priced Windows laptops, Chromebooks claim to have better screens, more spacious touchpads and more appealing designs.

"Chromebooks are a new type of computer from Google designed to help you get things done faster and easier. They run Chrome OS, an operating system that has multiple layers of security, cloud storage, and the most popular Google products built-in... if you love using Chrome on your PC, you'll get going on a Chromebook in seconds," said a Google spokesperson.

C720 is powered by Intel Celeron 2955U processor based on Haswell architecture. It has a 11.6-inch screen and weighs 1.25kg. It has 2GB RAM and 16GB SSD for storage. The laptop claims to offer a battery life of over 8.5 hours.

Chromebook 14 is also powered by Intel Celeron 2955U. It has a 14-inch screen and weighs 1.85kg. It has 16GB SSD and 4GB RAM. Chromebook 14 claims a battery life of over 9.5 hours.

Google said that Chromebook buyers will get 100GB free storage on Drive, the company's cloud storage service, for two years.

"The Acer C720 is a significant step forward for our highly-acclaimed Acer Chromebook line, as it delivers speedy performance, quick boot times, a matte anti-glare display and a slimmer design that is portable enough for anywhere use," said S Rajendran, chief marketing officer at Acer India.

First look: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

Remember when people used personal computers - desktops and laptops - to check email, view video and keep tabs on Facebook? Back in that far-away era, I'd have several windows open for Web browsers, a word processor, a photo editor and sometimes a reader for PDF documents.

I miss that capability on mobile devices, particularly on full-size tablets with a decent amount of display space. With iPads and Android tablets, I'm typically limited to one window displayed at a time; other apps run in the background, out of sight. With Windows 8 tablets, I can run two windows side by side, but I'm constrained in what I can do with them. It gets better with the Windows 8.1 update due out next week, but it's still not the free-for-all I had with PCs.

So I marveled at a pair of multitasking features that come with Samsung's new tablet, formally called Galaxy Note 10.1 - 2014 Edition. Sporting a 10.1-inch display, measured diagonally, the Note tablet goes on sale in the US on Thursday at a starting price of $550.

The first of the multitasking features, called Multi-Window, has been available in Samsung devices for about a year, but it works with many more apps now. You can run two apps side by side, such as Facebook on one side and YouTube video on the other.

Like Windows 8 tablets, you're limited to just two apps. You can change how much of the screen each one takes, a capability coming with Windows 8.1, but you can't choose to have a window take up just the top left corner, the way you can on PCs. In addition, Multi-Window isn't a universal feature. Apps for Netflix and Hulu won't work, for instance. You currently have about 18 apps to choose from, including Facebook and a variety of Google and Samsung apps.

With that limitation, it's nice that Samsung Electronics is supplementing Multi-Window with a feature called Pen Window.

With it, simply draw a box on the screen with the included stylus, and choose one of seven apps to open in a new window. Do it again and again until you open all seven apps, if you wish. That's nine in all, counting the two with Multi-Window. Each Pen Window app appears in a window that floats over your main app (or two apps if you use Multi-Window). You can move that window around on your screen and resize it, just as you can on PCs. Need a break from it? Just minimize it into a small dot and move it out of the way.

Like Multi-Window, you're restricted in what apps you can use with Pen Window, though I expect more to get added over time. For now, Pen Window on the tablet works with YouTube, the calculator, the alarm clock, your contacts list, the Web browser and two chat apps - Samsung's ChatOn and Google's Hangouts. I like the fact that you can open all of them and keep them out of the way in a minimized state. That way, it's just one click when you need the calculator and one click when you're done.

The iPad doesn't do that. Amazon's Kindle Fire doesn't do that. Other Android tablets don't do that. Windows 8.1 won't do that - at least not in the tablet-style viewing mode that Microsoft prefers you stick with. You'll have to go to the classic, desktop mode to resize windows, which defeats the purpose of having Windows 8 or 8.1. Windows 8.1 will go further than Multi-Window in letting you run up to four apps side by side, but that works only on larger screens, not portable tablets.

Beyond multitasking, the new Note tablet offers a My Magazine mode giving you personalized highlights, such as news topics of interest, content from your social media feeds and suggestions on things to do and see, based on your current location. It's a good concept, though Facebook isn't available through it yet.

The new tablet also gives you quick access to the tools you can accomplish with its stylus. Pen Window is one. Another feature lets you add notes to a screenshot of what you see. Another lets you clip a section of a Web page and store it with a Web link.

Unfortunately, not everything worked. Text recognition was poor. I'm supposed to be able to jot down an email address or a phone number with the stylus and have that handwriting converted into a contacts entry. But the device constantly confuses the letters "o" and "l" with the numerals "0" and "1."

Pen Window also is more difficult than necessary to set up. You need to take out the stylus for an Air Command tool to appear on the screen. You choose Pen Window, then draw a box on your screen with your stylus. Then you choose the app you want to open. Do all of that again to get additional apps, after figuring out how to get Air Command again with your stylus already out. It would have been simpler to have a button on the home screen that you can tap with your finger or stylus.

In addition, Samsung could have done more with the apps in minimized state. Google's chat app is reduced to a circular icon. It could have flashed or changed colors to notify me of a new chat message, rather than make me open and close it regularly to check.

The tablet's back is still made of plastic, but it feels like leather - an improvement over previous Samsung devices. The tablet does feel heavy, at 1.2 pounds, but that's still lighter than the 1.4 pounds for the full-size iPad. If you want light, wait until early November for the large-size version of Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX. It weighs just 0.83 pound.

Samsung's tablet is also pricey - the $550 starting price tops the iPad's $499 and the Fire's $379. Of course, neither the iPad nor the Fire includes a stylus.

One more complaint: Although the tablet uses the latest version of Android, 4.3, it doesn't offer that system's feature of letting multiple people share a device with separate profiles.

With the Note, it's clear some of the functionality we've long associated with PCs is coming to devices we're just getting to know. There's more to be done, including support for multiple users, but I'm glad Samsung is leading us in that direction.

Samsung’s curved phone is high on hype, low on value

On Wednesday, Samsung unveiled Galaxy Round, a phone with a curved screen. The company is calling it world's first phone with a curved screen, which sounds impressive. But the Korean firm neither provided details on how the curved screen would meaningfully help users nor explained what its customers in future can expect from phones that are not flat.

The reality is that even though the concept of curved screens sounds impressive, it is not likely to alter the user experience for smartphone users in any significant way.

One thing that most people have missed in the hype is that a curved screen doesn't mean a flexible screen. The screen in Galaxy Roundmay have subtle curve, it is still made of tough glass, which means it will not be bendable or absorb shock to survive falls.

The curved glass screen will probably not enable new form factors for smart devices unless companies find a way to create curved batteries and flexible or curved printed circuit boards.

Samsung has highlighted the user interface changes that curved screen has enabled. On Wednesday Pranav Mistry, who heads Think Tank Team and research division at Samsung, tweeted that the Galaxy Round "brings roll effect, gravity effect and new bounce UX (user experience) in addition to an amazingly snug grip, thanks to that curved form."

The roll effect is the slight movement that the curved backcover on the Galaxy Round enables. This means when this phone is kept on table, you can give the side of device a gentle push to roll it towards you. The device will register the movement and display the lockscreen, along with any notification you may have.

This is in no way an improvement over the way current generation of smartphones can display notifications. For example, on LG G2 you can double tap the screen when it is kept on a table to see the notifications. Even on Galaxy phones, all you have to do is press the home button for the same action. You don't have to pick up the phone to wake up the screen.

The gravity effect allows users to move from home screen to home screen with gestures. The bounce effect can control apps like music player to skip to next or previous song with a simple nudge to the left or the right side of the device, even when the screen is locked.

These are not some unique features enabled by the curved glass. These features rely on gyroscope and can be implemented in smartphones with flat glass screen.

The Galaxy Round is not the next big thing. It is a proof of concept device created to give Samsung bragging right that it was first to market with a smartphone that had curved display. Technically, even this claim is not correct. The first smartphone with the curved glass wasNexus S, which had a very subtle horizontal curve on its screen. Though it was also made by Samsung so the company can claim it was first to the market with a curved smartphone.

Flexible displays could be the next big thing Curved screens can have some unique uses but so far smartphone or technology companies have failed to demonstrate them. One use of a curved screen can be to create a smartwatch that fits the wrist ergonomically. For example this concept image of an Apple Watch created by Esben Oxholm shows how the device could be created using a curved glass screen.

Unfortunately, the problem with smart and thin devices that have curved displays is that other components still have the flat shape. Just hours after Samsung unveiled LG announced that it had started producing flexible batteries. While this will undoubtedly help, engineers and designers will have to come up with imaginative ways to use these technologies in meaningful manner before they can provide an improvement over the current devices. Flexible displays are more promising. Both Samsung and LG have shown samples of high-resolution flexible displays.

Samsung even created a fully-working smartphone with flexible display and showed it during Consumer Electronic Show earlier in January. This smartphone had the display gracefully melding into the back cover. At that time Samsung did specify how it could use the extra display space in the prototype but suggested that the sides of the device could be used as notification centre. So far, we have yet to see any such display in an actual device.

But even in the case of flexible displays, the actual benefits are yet to be demonstrated. In the concepts and artworks by several companies, including Samsung, magazine like devices that can rolled or folded have been shown. But that kind of future so far only exist in labs and artistic concepts.

General Electric announced partnerships with AT&T, Cisco Systems and Intel to expand its 'Industrial Internet' service that allows its customers to analyze data and predict outcomes.

The service helps customers analyze industrial 'big data'- data so large that it is difficult to process using traditional database and software. This would help customers minimize downtime, increase productivity, lower fuel costs and reduce emissions.

By connecting machines to the network and the cloud, workers can track, monitor, and operate GE's machinery wirelessly from anywhere through secure and machine-to-machine communications, GE Software's Corporate Officer Bill Ruh said.

GE has existing partnerships with Amazon's Amazon Web Services, Accenture Plc, and Pivotal to support the service.

GE said the ten "predictivity" products it launched last year have contributed revenue of $290 million so far this year. The company said it has 14 new customers for the 14 products launched on Wednesday.

According to technology research group Wikibon, industrial data is expected to grow at two times the rate of any other big data segment over the next decade.

The number of social media users are expected to grow 17 per cent to reach 91 million in urban India by December 2013, on the back of rising Internet penetration due to increasing affordability of smartphones and availability of cost effective data plans.

The number of social media users in urban India reached 78 million by June 2013, a report by IAMAI and IMRB International said.

"The report estimates that the number of social media users by October 2013 will be 86 million and by December 2013, will be 91 million, showing an overall growth of 17 per cent since June 2013," it said.

It said facebook is the leading website accessed by 96 per cent of all social media users and it is most used to connect with friends, publishing content and searching contacts.

The survey was conducted across 35 cities of the country. The report said social networking through mobile phones is widely observed with 19.8 million users accessing the websites on mobiles.

"With mobile penetrations reaching very high levels and an increasing number of individuals owning smartphones that allow Internet access, social networking is rapidly penetrating the Internet user base across length and breadth of India," the report said.

Afforadable mobile Internet plans additionally serve to increase usage levels, it added.

The report said "non-working women" are tipped to be the next emerging demographic segment with nearly 10 per cent of them accessing social media.

It also highlighted that the medium is increasingly used by political institutions and 2-5 per cent of election budgets are estimated to be spent on social media initiatives.

"Small-scale campaign responsibilities are usually outsourced by the political parties whereas critical election campaigns are managed in-house by the party experts," it said.

The report estimates that investing in various social media initiatives could lead to a vote swing of around 3-4 per cent among the users in the country.

While Apple has exclusive stores that can give consumers a taste of iPhones and iPads even if they are just checking out the devices and not buying them, people looking to get an Android phone often have to rely on the advice of phone dealers. Spice Mobility, a company that also sells Android phones, plans to change it. It has opened two stores dedicated to Android devices. One is in Noida at the Great India Palace Mall and the other store is in Koramangala, Bangalore.

The stores, called AndroidLand, will sell Android devices from various manufacturers, including Samsung, Sony Sony, HTC, Lenovo, Xolo, Micromax and Karbonn. The stores will have live demo units and free Wi-Fi so that consumers can check out a device thoroughly before buying it. Accessories will also be sold at the stores.

Taking a leaf out of Apple's book, Spice is putting Android 'experience specialists' in the stores. These 'specialists' will help consumers understand the Android devices better.

"We are excited to launch the first AndroidLand store in India," said Dilip Modi, co-founder and group CEO, Spice. "We are confident customers will love the fun and engaging store concept that we developed in collaboration with Google. We have created a destination for customers to experience Android technology and learn about what they can do with mobile internet."

Spice said that the stores have an open-plan design that would encourage customers to discover the world of Android better. There will Android robots in the stores to make them look different from the usual stores.

Another feature of the store is Google Play Zone, where consumers will be able to experience and download apps and games available for Android platform.

BSNL, MTNL must invest in R&D: Security agency

| |
0 comments

The National Security Council Secretariat wants to make it mandatory for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd to invest in R&D to reduce dependence on imports and also develop a vibrant telecom products ecosystem in the country.

The NSCS is India's apex security agency that looks into the country's political, economic, energy and strategic security concerns.

"Telecom research efforts in India are sub-optimal and it could be considered whether expenditure on R&D could be made mandatory and eligible for tax benefits, which would be particularly relevant for public sector entities like BSNL and MTNL," says the NSCS in a confidential note seen by ET.

A senior BSNL executive said "there is currently no compulsion on either BSNL and MTNL to spend money on product development research".

At present, bulk of the telecom R&D activities by government entities in undertaken by Centre for Development of Telematics Ltd (C-DoT) and ITI Ltd, while the telecom department's technical wing, the Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC) plays a coordinating role.

"While C-DoT and ITI have made forays into telecom product development, these needs to be enhanced much more for evolving an ecosystem that fosters development of patents, generation of intellectual property rights and also influences international communications standards," says the NSCS report.

It further adds that "incentives must be considered" for generating and registering IPRs relating to telecom products. The apex security agency has also urged the telecom department to strengthen internal systems to undertake "assurance testing and certification" before any component is integrated into Indian telecom networks.
It, however, believes "blocking of procurements from foreign companies may not be a practical proposition", given the heavy dependence of the domestic telecom industry on foreign gear, and accordingly, wants the telecom department to examine whether the current model of testing and certifying telecom products in the UK can be implemented in India.

The report does not provide details of the UK testing model. The NSCS has also urged the telecom department to consider the feasibility of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) for highend telecom products manufacturing.

"SEZs can assure a domestic market as well as promote exports to reap the benefits of economies of scale to make India a source of highend telecom equipment," says the central agency.

The apex security body's observations also come at a time when India is setting up multiple regulatory agencies for coordinating telecom security related initiatives to shield India's telephone networks from potential cyberattacks.

Soon, change TV channels through your tweets

Twitter unveiled a partnership with Comcast and its NBCUniversal unit that allows television viewers to tune in to a show or change channels directly from a tweet.

The deal, which could also be expanded to other television or video producers, uses a "See It" button integrated in a tweet that allows a Twitter user to instantly connect to a TV program.

It builds on the use of Twitter as a "second screen" for television viewers, who use the messaging platform for real-time conversations, and in some cases votes, on a program.

Comcast said it will give subscribers of its Xfinity TV service the ability to change the channel, set the digital video recorder or play a show on demand, directly from an expanded tweet.

"Each day, Twitter plays host to the real-time conversation about television and a large portion of that conversation occurs while a program is live on the air," Twitter vice president Jana Messerschmidt said on the service's blog.

"Millions of people are exposed to tweets about a program, so much so that they're often motivated by the Twitter buzz to tune in. By partnering with Comcast, we'll be able to make it easier than ever to turn on the show everyone is talking about and jump into the conversation."

Messerschmidt said "See It" is designed to integrate with other video distribution partners, television networks and websites and added, "We look forward to working with Comcast to extend this offering to other partners who will connect more great content to Twitter. Ultimately, we want to make watching TV along with Twitter even more fun."

Comcast said "See It" will debut in November with shows from NBCUniversal networks.

"See It is a simple yet powerful feature that creates an instant online remote control," said Comcast chairman and chief executive Brian Roberts.

"Comcast is taking a leap forward in social TV by enabling Twitter users to more easily find and view the shows they want to watch and discover new shows. Twitter complements the live viewing experience and is an ideal partner for Comcast and NBCUniversal."

Twitter, which has about 218 million active users worldwide, is in the process of launching a public offering to raise some $1 billion.

Comcast and Twitter also announced a new advertising partnership that will enable NBCUniversal advertising clients to expand their TV and digital sponsorships to Twitter.
