Cybercriminals tried to steal passwords of corporate and individual customers of Punjab National Bank (PNB) last week, global cybersecurity firm Websense said.

California-based Websense, which provides protection against cyberattacks and data theft, said it was able to block the intrusion, which involved a phishing attack.

Phishing involves sending emails purporting to be from reputable firms to unsuspecting individuals and also corporate entities to induce then in revealing personal and financial information like passwords, credit card numbers etc.

"Last week, Websense Security Labs came across a phishing email targeting PNB customers. The phishing attack was aimed to obtain password of corporate and individual customers," Websense regional director India, Surendra Singh told PTI.

PNB is not the client of the company, but these phishing mails were sent to several individuals and some corporate who are clients of Websense, he added.

PNB officials were not immediately available for comments. Singh said this phishing campaign requires the recipient to open an email attachment and fill in the required fields, including user ID, password, transaction password and mobile number.

Once completed the form redirects customers to a legitimate bank site, while their personal information including password credentials are sent to a server under the attacker's control, he added.

"This information is often sold by cybercriminals to the internet underworld or they use it themselves, Singh said.

There has been an increase in the intensity and number of phishing and other cyberattacks trying to steal financial information from individuals as well as corporate and Websense expects such acts to grow in the future, he added.

The firms security predictions for 2014 projects that cyber criminals will rely less on high-volume advanced malware because over time it runs a higher risk of detection.

They will instead use lower volume, more targeted attacks to secure a foothold, steal user credentials and move unilaterally throughout infiltrated networks.

New smart watch lets parents track their child's location
A new GPS-enabled smart watch that allows parents to track their kids' location and send them texts has been developed in the US.

The FiLIP watch, designed for children aged 4 to 11, is hooked up to an app on a parent's phone.

Using the FiLIP app, parents and other pre-authorised adults can track the child's location, make calls, send texts and set "SafeZones," which are virtual radii around a specific destination, 'Mashable' reported.

Parents select SafeZones based on the location where their child usually spends the most time, such as school. FiLIP sends a notification to parents whenever their child leaves or arrives at a SafeZone.

Parents can programme up to five numbers into the gadget, which kids can call with the touchof a button.

In case of emergency, the child can hold down a red button, prompting the watch to call the first person in its contact list.

If no one answers, the watch calls the other four assigned contacts.

Android users, you may be able to use the Meego-inspired Sailfish OS on your devices. Jolla, the company behind the new Sailfish mobile operating system, is planning to give users the option to load its Sailfish OS on Android devices. The company already allows Android apps to be installed on its smartphones.

In an interview with Finnish website Talouselama, Jolla CEO Tomi Pienimaki said that users will be able to sideload Sailfish on their Android phones and tablets.

Pienimaki stated in the interview: "About half of the smartphone buyers are upgrading their older or cheaper devices with a better version of Android. For us it is a possibility to distribute our operating system especially in China. There are websites that already distribute [OS] software and the Chinese customers are doing it - so we don't have to teach them. We just have to get Sailfish to those websites - and to make sure that Sailfish will run on different kind of Android devices."

However, Jolla does not plan to earn revenue by selling its operating system. Instead, it aims to generate revenue via apps, services and advertising.

While the plan of porting Sailfish on Android devices is in the works, it is not available presently.

Microsoft was reportedly in talks with HTC to port Windows Phone operating system on the Taiwanese manufacturer's Android smartphones. Ubuntu's mobile version has also been ported to various Android smartphones.

Online US shopping for Black Friday deals soared to $3 billion during a two-day period beginning Thursday, with tablets and cell phones as top must-have items, estimates showed.

Online purchases reached $1.93 billion on Friday itself, the unofficial start of the retail sector's holiday season.

That marked a 39% increase over 2012, according to software maker Adobe, which analyzed 400 million visits on some 2,000 American shopping websites.

Holiday shopping traditionally accounts for 20 to 40 percent of an individual retailer's annual sales, according to the National Retail Federation.

Early online Black Friday sales reached $1.06 billion, up 18% from last year, according to Adobe.

Technology giant IBM also reported increased numbers in overall online sales as it looked at 800 merchant websites.

IBM said internet sales jumped 19.7% over last year on Thanksgivingand 19% on Black Friday, with orders averaging $135.27, a 2.2% increase compared to last year.

Online shoppers may have been wise to avoid stores, with reports of fistfights, a stabbing and a shooting as people elbowed their way through crowded shopping floors to snatch heavily discounted items.

Purchases of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices accounted for 24.2% of online sales, according to Adobe.

Tablets represented 15.6% of online sales while smartphones representing 8.6%.

IBM also found that mobile devices accounted for 21.8% of sales. According to Adobe, of the $3 billion in total online sales over the two days, $417 million was done on iPads and $126 million was done on iPhones, while Android phones were used to buy $106 million in purchases and Android tablets accounted for $42 million.

IBM said tablets were used for 14.4% of online sales, against 7.2% on smartphones. On average, tablet users each spent $132.75 and smartphone users spent $115.63.

The company also found that iPad and iPhone users spent more, shelling out an average of $127.92, compared to $105.20 for users of Google's Android system.

Adobe agreed that Apple users spent more than people using Android devices.

IBM also said purchases made from Apple devices accounted for 18.1% of total online sales, against 3.5% for Android devices.

IBM and Adobe did not examine in-store purchases. According to initial estimates of in-store sales released Saturday by retail research group ShopperTrak, Americans spent $12.3 billion during shopping over the two-day period, a 2.3% increase from the same timeframe in 2012.

According to the firm, stores that opened on Thursday -- a new trend transforming the sacrosanct Thanksgiving holiday -- attracted more people than last year. Traffic in brick-and-mortar shops on Black Friday, however, fell 11.4%, with retail sales decreasing by 13.2%.

"The Black Friday shopping experience is changing with more shoppers choosing to go out on Thanksgiving Day," said Bill Martin, ShopperTrak founder.

"Consumers increasingly research products online before entering stores. When they arrive, customers know exactly what they want to buy," he said.

This season's holiday shopping season is a full six days and one shopping weekend shorter than last year's due to the late Thanksgiving season.

India to seek US help for joint mechanism on dealing cyber crime

ImageWith growing reluctance of service providers to furnish real time information in cyber crime cases, India will seek active cooperation from the US for setting a joint mechanism to overcome such difficulties.

As the two countries plan to meet at the India-US Homeland Security dialogue here on December 4, the difficulties faced by Indian security agencies in cyber-crime related cases top the agenda.

The two-day meet will be inaugurated by Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and attended by US Assistant Secretary for Policy (Homeland Security) David Heyman and US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell among others.

In the agenda papers it was stated that India, which ranks fifth in the world in the incidence of cyber crime, has seen hacking of 9,000 websites in three years thus posing a serious threat to the government.

"Cyber criminals are now moving beyond computers and attacking mobile hand held devices such as smart phones and tablets," it said.

Highlighting the difficulties faced by Indian security agencies, the papers said most of the prominent service providers like Hotmail, Google, Facebook, Twitter are based in the US and a general request takes anywhere between 15 and 80 days.

"Further there is no guarantee that the required information would be provided at all.

"... however, despite urgent requests, there have never been provided by any of the service providers even in single case," it was stated.

To start with, an Indo-American Alert, Watch and Warn Network of participating Law Enforcement Agencies of both the countries should be set up to rapidly disseminate cyber crime information and to manage response to crises, incidents and threats.
